A new state-of-the-art $4.2 million facility for St John Ambulance regional office and depot in Northam has been announced under Round Two of the Australian Government's National Stronger Regions Fund.
Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Australian Government is committing $2.1 million toward the project which would boost local jobs and improve community infrastructure.
“The National Stronger Regions Fund is providing $1 billion over five years to promote economic growth in areas of disadvantage in Australia's regions,” Mr McCormack said.
“The Australian Government has selected 111 projects across Australia, just like this one, for a total funding value of $293 million in the second round of the programme.
“The programme encourages communities to form partnerships between not-for-profit organisations, the private sector and all levels of government to deliver projects.
Federal Member for Pearce Christian Porter said the project had been identified as a priority for infrastructure in Northam.
“The new St John Ambulance office and depot at Northam will replace the existing facilities. It will be better equipped to service residents in surrounding areas,” Mr Porter said.
“Construction works will include a new eight ambulance garage, ambulance crew rest areas, offices for regional staff and a large training centre.”
St John Ambulance Western Australian Chief Executive Officer Tony Ahern said the new facilities would be funded equally with the Australian Government and St John Ambulance WA both providing $2.1 million towards the project.
“The funding announcement is great news for the town of Northam and its surrounding areas,” Mr Ahern said.
“The new facilities will ensure our ambulance services and resources within growing regional areas, such as Northam, are able to deliver better patient outcomes.
“This forms part of St John Ambulance's strategic plan to enhance our service offering and network within Western Australia.”
Construction of the New Northam regional office and depot is expected to begin in October 2016 and finish in September 2017.
