The Australian Government is delivering on its election commitments to the electorate of Herbert through the Community Development Grants Programme.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs and Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones today announced that the Australian Government has approved funding of $5 million for the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre Refurbishment Project.

Mr Jones said the project will undertake structural repair and refurbishment of Townsville's indoor sport, entertainment and convention centre facility.

“What we expect now, is that the Mayor and Townsville City Council will get on and do the job; the people of Townsville want the Entertainment ready for the next Crocs’ Season.

“What we said we'd do before the election, we deliver on after the election. Delays to this project were a mess created by Labor but we have cleaned it up.”

Mr Briggs said the funding for the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre was another example of the Australian Government's commitment to providing long term improvements in economic infrastructure for communities across Australia.

“We are getting on with the job of providing $314.2 million toward almost 300 community projects across Australia to build a stronger economy and create jobs.

“The funding has now been approved for refurbishment of the facilities, enhancing infrastructure that is vital to regional community groups.”

The Community Development Grants Programme funding will support needed infrastructure that promotes stable, secure and viable local and regional economies.

The programme is administered by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development which undertakes a value for money assessment of each project against the programme guidelines to ensure the efficient, effective, ethical, and economical use of public money.
