South and Richmond intersection upgrade to improve traffic flow

The Australian and South Australian Governments are getting on with delivering the $1.5 billion North-South Corridor with the start of an $11 million upgrade of the South Road and Richmond Road intersection.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs and State Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan today announced preliminary works for the upgrade will commence today, including vegetation removal and utility service relocations to make way for road widening works.

Mr Briggs said that this upgrade will relieve traffic congestion until the non-stop north-south corridor is in place through this area.

“We need to eliminate the worst bottlenecks and targeting one of the most congested intersections on South Road is the next step to improving the corridor's productive capacity.”

“These works will reduce congestion and slash travel times for motorists meaning less time spent stuck in traffic and more time being productive at work or at home with their families,” Mr Briggs added.

Mr Mullighan stated that the preliminary works at Richmond Road are expected to be completed in late 2014, weather permitting.

“Major works on the upgrade of the South Road and Richmond Road intersection are expected to begin in early 2015, and I'm pleased this project will support around 40 jobs.”

“Works will include a third through-lane for south bound traffic on South Road, and a second eastbound lane on Richmond Road between South Road and Railway Terrace in Mile End South.”

“Recently completed projects such as Anzac Highway Gallipoli Underpass, Northern Expressway, Southern Expressway Duplication as well as the new Torrens Road to River Torrens project and Darlington Upgrade all contribute to a non-stop north-south corridor,” Mr Mullighan added.

Traffic and parking restrictions will apply during the preliminary works on Richmond Road.
