  • Smoother journey for east Victorian motorists as traffic in both directions switched onto two recently built westbound lanes at Fulham
  • Fulham 2—one of nine sections being upgraded between Traralgon and Sale—will improve safety through wider medians when fully complete in early 2018
  • Upgrade will improve travel times and safety for up to 17,300 vehicles estimated to use the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale each day

Today's opening of a new section of the Princes Highway at Fulham means a safer and smoother journey for drivers travelling between Traralgon and Sale.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said traffic travelling in both directions would now be diverted onto two recently completed westbound lanes, allowing further upgrades to continue on the existing highway.

“This a major milestone for the Fulham 2 section, with works including the creation of two lanes in each direction, separated by a 15 metre median. The intersection of the Princes Highway with Sale - Cowwarr Road and Hopkins Road/Williams Drive has also been upgraded, with a wide median built to protect turning traffic,” Mr Chester said.

“The improvements mean safer access to adjacent properties, side roads and West Sale destinations such as the aerodrome and the Fulham Correctional Centre.

“The project will also increase the highway's capacity, reduce travel times and improve traffic flow and safety for upwards of 17,000 vehicles which are estimated to use the stretch between Traralgon and Sale each day.”

Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the upgrade would help reduce travel times between Traralgon and Sale.

“When complete, this duplication will reduce congestion and improve safety, especially for families heading to the Gippsland Lakes for holidays,” Mr Donnellan said.

“Safety is our top priority, that's why we've invested in this important upgrade.

“The traffic switch will also make it easier for locals to get in and out of their homes and access side roads.”

Construction of the Fulham 2 section is expected to be completed by mid-2018, after starting in October 2016. Works are continuing on the Nambrok 2 section, which is due for completion in late-2018. Completion of the Traralgon East 3 section is anticipated around mid-2019.

The Princes Highway East upgrade will duplicate around 31 kilometres of road between Traralgon and Sale, with the Australian Government providing $210 million and the Victorian Government $50 million to the project.
