- New accommodation for families and carers at Bega's South East Regional Hospital
- New wing includes six bedrooms, each with an ensuite and a shared lounge area
- The Coalition Government invested $450,000 in the project
Family and carers of patients in Bega's South East Regional Hospital now have access to on-site accommodation, after the completion of the first stage to expand support services at the hospital.
Acting Minister for Regional Development Darren Chester said the development included six motel-style rooms, each with an ensuite, a shared lounge area, as well as eight car parking spaces.
“These rooms will provide around 1,700 nights' accommodation every year, which is a huge benefit for carers and the families of patients,” Mr Chester said.
“These rooms will give an added sense of security to patients, and take stress off their families and carers now they can be close to loved ones receiving treatment.”
Senator for New South Wales Arthur Sinodinos said the project would provide an ongoing economic boost to the Bega Valley area.
“With most of the builders locally sourced and many local service clubs involved in this project, there has been a strong boost to the Bega economy,” Senator Sinodinos said.
“There will also be ongoing roles once construction is complete, such as reception, administration, cleaning and maintenance, which will provide entry-level jobs to the local community.”
Stage two of the project, which is being funded under the Government's Building Better Regions Fund, will deliver a further six rooms and a communal area with kitchen facilities as well as a dining and lounge area.
The Coalition Government invested $450,000 in this project. Other funding was provided by Bega Cheese ($150,000), Community Carers Accommodation South East Inc ($99,000), Bendigo Bank ($65,000), EC Blomfield Holdings ($50,000), Tathra Lions Club ($50,000), Rotary Clubs of Bega and Pambula ($10,000 each), Rotary Club of Merimbula, Eden Lioness Club and Lions Club of Pambula-Merimbula ($5,000 each) and CWA Pambula-Merimbula Branch ($1,000).
