  • Queensland allocated over $12 million under latest Black Spot Programme funding to upgrade 42 roads
  • On average, black spot projects reduce fatalities and injuries on the roads by 30%

The Turnbull-Joyce government is changing lives and saving lives by upgrading 42 roads across Queensland with a crash history.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester and the Chair of the Queensland Black Spot Consultative Panel, Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien, today announced just over $12 million for the state, under the Black Spot Programme’s 2017–18 funding round.

“The Coalition Government is getting on with building safer roads and these ‘black spot’ roads will be substantially improved over the next 12 months,” Mr Chester said.

“I’m passionate about reducing road trauma, and on average completed Black Spot road projects reduce fatalities and injuries by 30 per cent.”

Mr O’Brien said this critical investment in black spot projects will deliver safer roads in 18 local government areas throughout Queensland.

“By fixing and upgrading road locations where crashes are occurring through safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts, we are helping make our local roads safer for all road users,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The 42 black spot projects are an important contribution towards the improvement of safety with 11 fatalities and 183 injuries recorded at these sites.”

The Australian government would like to thank the panel, which reviews priorities for the Black Spot programme. The panel includes representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, Queensland Trucking Association, Bicycle Queensland, Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety (Queensland University of Technology) and state and local government.
