Detour Plans Unveiled for Orange Bridge Project

  • Project to increase capacity of bridge over Broken Hill rail line improving access to key industrial areas for heavy vehicles

The groundwork is being laid for construction of a new rail overpass bridge on Forest Road in Orange, with local residents and businesses able to have their say on how to reduce congestion when works get underway.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the release of the detour plan for the new Forest Road Bridge showed a number of proposed detours for traffic when work on the new bridge starts later this year.

“With construction of the new Forest Road Bridge to take around 12 months to complete, it is important to plan ahead for detours and other potential impacts,” Mr Chester said.

“This project is one of the critical upgrades the Australian Government is helping to fund under our Bridges Renewal Programme. We're investing $1.25 million in this project, which will give heavy vehicles better access through Orange and improve safety on local roads.”

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said a thorough Review of Environmental Factors (REF) assessment was underway to plan for the upgrade.

“It's great to see the next milestone reached on this project,” Mr Gee said.

“A team of consultants will be looking at the bridge and how to best manage traffic and other impacts during the construction phase.

“That includes looking at possible detours around the bridge site and how to best manage traffic flow when part of the road is closed when the new single-lane bridge over the rail line is built, increasing the structure's capacity.”

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said giving local residents and businesses a say on how the project is managed was critical.

“Now that the proposed detour maps have been released, we want to get people's thoughts on them and any issues they might have,” Mrs Pavey said.

“When access across the bridges is closed, traffic will be diverted along Gardiner Road, Anson Street and the Southern Feeder Road, adding just over one kilometre to a journey. Unrestricted two-way traffic will be maintained where practical but full closure of the road will be needed during high-risk activities such as crane lifts.

“Feedback from residents and local businesses will let us manage the impact of construction in the best way possible.”

The $2.5 million Forest Road Bridge Replacement is jointly funded under Round 2 of the Australian Government's Bridges Renewal Programme and Round 2 of the New South Wales Government's Fixing Country Roads initiative.
