Vital infrastructure upgrades to improve heavy vehicle safety and productivity across Australia

Media Release

DC103/2016

01 September 2016

Key freight routes across Australia will benefit from more than $97.6 million in upgrades through round five of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Programme.

The programme, which aims to increase the productivity and safety of heavy vehicles, will see funding distributed across regional and rural areas to improve existing road freight networks.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the improvements would benefit both freight operators and the community.

“Local farmers and manufacturers will be able to get goods to market much quicker, improving our national productivity and competitiveness. And by upgrading these routes, all motorists will enjoy better, safer and more reliable road access,” Mr Chester said.

“The Australian Government has identified safety and productivity upgrades for heavy vehicles as a national priority, and we are continuing to roll out projects that will not only improve lives, but also save lives.”

Mr Chester said 152 applications were received from state, territory and local governments under Round Five of the programme, highlighting its importance to regional and rural communities.

“The Australian Government's commitment of $97.6 million in this round of the programme will be matched by local councils and state governments, delivering a total investment of at least $217.6 million towards these vital projects,” he said.

“This is an important safety and infrastructure programme for regional Australia, which is why the government extended the programme and also committed an additional $40 million in the 2016–17 Budget.”

Each of the 86 road projects were selected as part of a competitive, merit based process. The list of successful projects under Round Five is at Attachment A.

More on the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Programme is available online at www.infrastructure.gov.au/hvspp.
