  • The Turnbull-Joyce government is committed to supporting the beef industry.
  • $12.51 million will be invested in Western Australia.
  • Marked a priority, a section of the Great Northern Highway is being widened.

The Turnbull-Joyce Government is supporting Western Australia's cattle industry by injecting funding into improving infrastructure in the state, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said.

“Under the Northern Australia Beef Roads Programme, the Coalition government will invest $12.51 million to undertake a road widening and realignment upgrade on the Great Northern Highway, between the Ord River and Turkey Creek,” Mr Chester said.

“This will assist in reducing the cost of transporting cattle and improving connectivity for local and regional commuters.

“The Great Northern Highway is a key cattle route and the upgrades to this section will assist in improving the reliability and safety of the cattle supply chain.

“The Beef Roads Programme recognises moving cattle from the farm gate to market involves some of the longest and most challenging land transport distances of any industry, anywhere in the world.

“I'd like to thank both Mr David Crombie, Director of Australian Agricultural Company, and Mr Troy Setter, CEO of Consolidated Pastoral Company Pty Ltd, who played a key leadership role in facilitating northern beef industry input and identifying priority road sections for upgrade.

“These identified proposals were then modelled by the CSIRO's TraNSIT model to help identify which projects delivered the greatest benefits to the northern Australian beef industry.

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matthew Canavan said the Australian Government was committed to realising the potential of northern Australia.

“The Great Northern Highway is the only sealed route linking Perth with the north of Western Australia, making it a core asset for not only the cattle industry but the freight industry, tourists and communities,” Senator Canavan said.

“The beef industry is the big winner from these investments. With beef prices at record levels, a bigger beef industry is a big part of developing Northern Australia."

The Australian Government is investing up to $100 million in northern Australia under the Programme, with an additional $600 million provided through the Northern Australia Roads Programme.

Western Australian Government is contributing 20 per cent of the Great Northern Highway project in partnership with the Australian Government.
