Joint release with:
ACT Minister for Transport and Municipal Services
Senator for ACT
Chair of ACT BlackSpot Consultative Panel
Construction has started on works to upgrade the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Coulter Drive in Belconnen which will improve road safety in the area.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the Australian Government fully funded the $197,000 upgrade through the Black Spot Programme.
“The programme is a crucial part of the Australian Government's commitment to reduce crashes on our roads,” Mr Chester said.
“Nationally, the Australian Government has committed $500 million to the Black Spot Programme from 2014–15 to 2018–19, including an additional $200 million over two years from 2015–16.”
ACT Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said improvements to the left hand slip lane on Coulter Drive would make the intersection safer for vehicles and cyclists.
“The improvements to the left hand slip lane will make it safer for vehicles to turn left onto Ginninderra Drive from Coulter Drive by providing motorists a better line of sight to oncoming traffic,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“A new path will also be installed which will connect to the existing shared path in Florey. This upgrade will help cyclists with safe and convenient access to a connected shared path network.
“There are no expected road closures during these works, however there will be some changed traffic arrangements including lane closures and reduced speed limits in place. I would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while this all gets underway.”
Senator for the ACT and Chair of ACT Black Spot Consultative Panel, Zed Seselja said the investment by the Australian Government would improve road safety for Canberra residents.
“This is a significant investment of nearly $200,000 and both cyclists and motorists will benefit from these safety upgrades,” said Senator Seselja.
