Federal Member for Dawson
Work has started on constructing an overtaking lane on the Bruce Highway, near Thomsetts Road south of Proserpine.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the $3 million project will deliver safety and efficiency improvements along the highway between Mackay and Proserpine.
“The overtaking lane near Thomsetts Road will help alleviate congestion on a busy stretch of the Bruce Highway and provide more opportunities for motorists to safely overtake buses, trucks and other vehicles,” Mr Chester said.
“The new overtaking lane will also help reduce the number of risky manoeuvres motorists sometimes make to overtake these sorts of vehicles.”
Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the Australian Government recognised the importance of building more overtaking lanes on the Bruce Highway.
“New overtaking lanes like this not only make travelling the highway safer, they also provide commercial vehicle operators with the efficiency gains they need to compete in a very competitive market place,” Mr Christensen said.
“The project near Thomsetts Road is one of several overtaking lane construction projects underway on the Bruce Highway in the Mackay Whitsunday district.”
Construction is expected to be completed in October 2016, weather permitting.
This $3 million Bruce Highway overtaking lane project is fully funded by the Australian Government.
