  • Second Range Crossing will save time for commercial vehicle operators from Brisbane to Darwin and Melbourne.
  • The Australian Government has contributed $1.137 billion toward the project with Queensland Government committing $321 million.

Christmas cheer and festivities are replacing hard hats as another successful year wraps up on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC) project.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said works on the TSRC would resume from 4 January 2017, with construction ready to start on key links to the transport network.

“Works will start on the Warrego East Interchange at Helidon Spa, the Warrego West Interchange at Charlton and, in the west, the Gore Highway Interchange at Athol,” Mr Chester said.

“The Warrego West interchange is a vital link between the TSRC, the busy Warrego Highway and Toowoomba’s fast-developing western industrial precinct, including Wellcamp Airport.

“These interchanges will save time for commercial vehicle operators, whether they are serving customers locally or on the Brisbane-Darwin or Brisbane-Melbourne links, contributing to a safer and faster link in the national road network.

“The TSRC is progressing as scheduled and is on track to be completed and open to motorists by late 2018.”

Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said project contractor Nexus had made strong progress on the TSRC since construction started in April 2016.

“Vegetation clearing is complete and works are now starting on key structures among the 24 bridges that will form part of the Second Range Crossing,” Mr Bailey said.

“If you're travelling towards Toowoomba from Brisbane, you can see the clearing that marks the start of the TSRC and connection to the Warrego Highway.

“From the New England Highway, you'll see bulk earthworks to the west, which include the Mort Street interchange.

“We ask holiday-season motorists to be vigilant, and adhere to the reduced speed limits and road signs in place.”

Federal Member for Groom John McVeigh said the Warrego East Interchange in the Lockyer Valley would allow westbound motorists to enter the crossing, or eastbound motorists to merge onto the Warrego Highway.

“Works are currently underway at the Gore Highway interchange with the TSRC at Athol, 20 kilometres west of Toowoomba, which will improve travel times on the busy Melbourne-Brisbane link,” Mr McVeigh said.

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said he was glad to see works on the eastern stages of this project in his electorate were set to begin shortly.

The Australian Government has committed up to $1.137 billion towards the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project, representing 80 per cent of the cost with Queensland contributing $321 million, equivalent to 20 per cent, through Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract arrangements.
